# Byte Conversion Chart

How do you know a Kilobyte from a Megabyte from a Gigabyte? I didn’t until I started doing research for this website on how to find a good web host.

Some articles I found said things like: If your hosting plan offers 1GB of space that should be plenty for a 100MB website.

Until I created this chart, that sentence meant nothing to me. Now I know that 1GB of space can hold 10 times 100MB.

I hope this byte conversion chart is helpful to you. I know I was mega-confused until I did this!

First, an explanation of what each term means:

### Definition of Bytes, Kilobytes, Megabytes, Gigabytes & Terabytes

The smallest unit is a byte, which consists of 8 bits.

Next come kilobytes, which equal 1024 bytes.

Then come megabytes (MB) which consist of 1,048,575 bytes or 1024 kilobytes.

Next come gigabytes (GB), which consist of 1,073,741,824 bytes (just over a billion); 1,048,576 kilobytes; or 1024 MB.

And last, for our purposes, are terabytes (TB). That's a trillion bytes, or to be exact, 1,099,511,627,776 bytes; 1,073,741,824 (just over a billion) kilobytes; 1,048,576 megabytes; or 1,024 Gigabytes.

### How to convert Gigabytes to Megabytes, etc.

Kilobyte (KB) Conversion

1 KB = 1024 bytes

Megabyte (MB) Conversion

1 MB = 1024 kilobytes

1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes

Gigabyte (GB) Conversion

1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (just over a billion)

1 GB = 1,048,576 kilobytes {KB)

1 GB = 1024 megabytes (MB)

Terabyte (TB) Conversion

1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (over a trillion)

1 TB = 1,073,741,824 kilobytes (KB) (just over a billion)

1 TB = 1,048,576 megabytes {MB)

1 TB = 1024 (GB)

It's a very simple, plain page, but so many of you visit this page, I thought you all might like to have something you can keep on your hard drive.

If that's not enough, I just found a a conversion calculator. Very cool. If you scroll down, you'll see a more advanced chart, which goes all the way up to yottabytes. until seconds ago, I didn't even know there was such a thing as yottabytes! Here's the link:
