How to write web content for a multi-page sales site
If you're selling a product or service on your website, you'll typically want to create a multi-page website. Other options would be to create an informational website and promote your product or service from within that site, or to create a one-page sales letter.
Those would be the two extremes. An informational site (like this one) is very low pressure - possibly too low pressure. An online sales letter might be too "salesy" on the other hand. A typical multi-page website will often be your best choice.
An Example of a Multi-Page Website, with a Bonus
A good example of a multi-page sales website is
Scribe for Hire.
I've used that site to sell my copywriting services since 2005.Not only is it an example, but its home page offers good advice on what to consider when you write your own home page. So I encourage you to read through the
Scribe for Hire
home page and use its advice in creating your own home page. The home page is by far the most important page, as it's the first page visitors see. It needs to make the best impression and inspire visitors to stick around for a while.
Other Pages to Include
Which pages to include will depend on your site of course. For my Scribe for Hire page, a "Portfolio" page is important, as visitors typically want to see samples of my work. There are a couple of pages that most sites should include, though. You should have an About Us page that tells people a little bit about who you are. This builds trust. I've recently seen About Us pages that talk about the site itself. While it's true that you shouldn't talk too much about yourself on the home page, the About Us page is important for letting people know there is a real person behind the site. This builds trust, which is vitally important when selling. Be sure to include your name. A photo is nice too. You'll want to be professional (they won't care if you're the Yo Yo Champion of the World unless your site is about yo yos). Stick to your site's subject, but don't be afraid to add a personal touch either. You should also include a Contact Us page, even though you should include contact information on most if not all of your pages. Don't just have a Menu Item called "Contact Us" and then have it link your visitor to an email to you. Offer some information on how to contact you instead.
Should You Hire a Copywriter?
I encourage you to try writing the copy yourself, using the guidelines on the Scribe for Hire home page.See what kind of response this gets. If you feel, after a month or so, that your response is weak, you may want to hire a copywriter. I offer a critique service that could save you a lot of money over hiring a copywriter. If you find the critique isn't enough and you need a copywriter, I deduct the cost of the critique from the cost of writing the copy. This service is described at my
Scribe for Hire
page. To find it, scroll down below the tips for writing your home page copy.
