How to write web content for an information website
This site is a good example of an information site. Note the web content, especially on the home page. The main point isn't to sell anything, although there is a little selling here. The main idea is to offer useful, high-quality information. If you're creating an informational site, you probably think the rules of sales copywriting don't apply. That's not quite true. Visit my copywriting site,
Scribe for Hire
, and view the seven tips for writing home page copy. Now look at the
home page
of this site. Does it follow these guidelines? It's true, I don't have an "About Us" page just yet, but that's only because this is still a new site. The home page is the one that most needs to follow these guidelines. It's the page that most readers will find first. If it's a good, high-quality page, people are more likely to want to find out more and visit your other pages.
Organize!
Please also note the organization of this site. You won't find random articles about website building. The steps involved are summarized on the home page. The pages leading from the menu are related to one of these steps or are otherwise related to the job of building a website. Most of these pages have more pages related to their own main subject (for instance, this is one of several pages coming from the main page on how to write web content). Be sure your own informational site is clearly organized. Now my subject lends itself to very clear organization. Yours might not. For instance, the examples from the Niche Research page, teen parenting and older parents, would not lend themselves to such a clearly organized, step-by-step approach. So don't fret if you can't get your site idea quite that organized.
Think about your audience
This site is geared to a very specific audience. It's for people who want to build a website, but who are not knowledgeable about websites. So every page has to be written for that audience. And again, I'm going to recommend the free e-book
