Pros and Cons of Hiring Web Designers

Hiring a web designer can give you a far more professional look than most templates will. As long as you find a good web designer.

Keep in mind, it doesn't matter where your web designer lives. It's easy to work with someone over the internet and by phone.

My last two websites were designed by Jessalynn Coolbaugh . I love the work she did for me. She was extremely fast. More important, she made both websites look fantastic.

I asked her to create "sister sites" out of a life coaching site for work-at-home moms and an early childhood music program. As disparate as these two ideas were, she pulled it off beautifully! I was impressed.

You can find samples of Jessalynn's work on her website (linked above). You can see the life coaching website she created for me at www.heartbeat-coaching.com and at www.heartbeat-childrens-music.com .

Another web designer I like is Joan Sotkin of Sotkin Web Services .

Both Jessalynn and Joan use WordPress to create websites. This has several advantages.

For me, the most important is the ability to go into my website and edit it on my own, without paying more fees to my web designer.

WordPress is also search engine friendly. Your blog is included as part of your website, which is pretty important.

And it allows you to add "plug ins." The importance of the plug in didn't hit me until I was slammed with literally hundreds of spam messages. I learned that I could install a plug in called Askimet and eliminate most of the spam. For $5 a month, it's saving me a lot of time and aggravation!
I was also very happy with the work of Maureen Barlow , who designed my Scribe for Hire website in 2005.

Hiring a designer is likely to be your most expensive option, but it's also likely to be the best way to create a truly professional looking website. For most businesses, projecting that professional image is quite important.

You'll also have far more control over what the website will look like.

But do find out whether or not you'll be able to edit the site on your own - or what the cost will be to have your web designer make edits for you.

In short, this is the most professional looking option. But it's worth it to check out less expensive options, as they may suit your purposes just fine, especially if you're adept at manipulating the graphics and other features in templates.
