Whenever I've checked out sites that offer website design templates, I've been astounded at how many ugly designs there are. Maybe the owners believe people won't pay for a simple design? The best templates in life are freeI've found two sources of simple, elegant templates that follow user-friendly website design guidelines. Steve also includes a user guide to help you figure out how to use the template. It's not a bad idea to view his
user guide
to help you figure out if using a template is too techie for you. Of course, because most of the templates are free, you could just download one and see how you do with it. The other template site that includes good web designs is:
Open Source Web Design
I was surprised to learn that you can use a program as simple as Notepad to edit your template. But you may want to use web design software so that you can see what the design will look like with your changes. You can download a free web design program called KompoZer at
www.kompozer.net.
Another simple option for viewing your website before you upload it is to open your template with Notepad, then open your web browser. Go to the browser's file menu and choose "open file." Simply open your Notepad file and you'll see what the design will look like when you upload it to the internet. Only problem with that option is that you won't be able to view your changes as you make them, something you can do with KompoZer.
